Urban Design and Development Seminar Two



Ø  FAR – floor area ratio is a very blunt crude instrument in developing. Leads to bad development and design

Ø  Cities bring people and activities together. Zoning separates and segregates

Ø  ZONING was enforced to maintain the value of land. Started in Germany then moved to the UK and USA. It was enforced in LA to manage noxious fumes away from residential areas

Ø  Zoning was used to discriminate racially against people – to segregate. ‘Racial organisation of zoning.’

Ø  Zoning protects existing property value, character, public interest

Ø  “Politics, planning and the Public interest” – Martin Meyerson. Case study on Chicago planning

Ø  Zoning protects/maintains.

Ø  Infrastructure and transport are a way to change the character of a place. Infrastructure is the basis for many urban renewal/change projects.

Ø  Zoning separates, where you want it to bring together the diversity that it can offer

Ø  Primary uses: education, work, residential, entertainment

Ø  Long term urban viability – need diversity of uses

Ø  Barangaroo – mix of primary uses including, parks, hotels, offices and residential with nearby entertainment of Darling Harbour
